Memories of Days Gone By: UP Diliman 50's-80's
The only things that remain are the memories. UP Campus has evolved from the vast expanse of cogon grass and miles and miles of dark neighborhoods into a bustling campus with new institutes and colleges, more 2012 traffic coming through the once idyllic neighborhoods and golf course we once knew. The students have come and gone, the older generation of its faculty members have left their legacies, the residential areas still have some vestiges of the original pioneers living in the permanent homes and row houses at the areas. There are the children of those pioneers, professors and teachers of the 50's who are the Batang UP Campus 60-70-80's once more reminiscing their childhood through a Facebook Group. Time has flown so fast that the Batang UP Campus 60-70-80's kids were almost dumbfounded that the years have gone by and their original playground has been replaced by new roads, new faces and new ways of going about campus business. Their memories will be on this website, to be a testament to the halcyon days when we were carefree but academically oriented, busy with recreating and creating, enjoying a wonderful life.
To be able to recollect memories from these images, exchange stories of past homes, past friendships and past experiences has been catharctic to many now adult youth who lived in the verdant grassy knolls and neighborhoods of Area 1,2,3,5 11,14 and 17. The quonset sawali houses are long gone, there are a few old homes of the pioneers that remain standing for posterity, but the collective experience of growing up with the people we all knew remain indelible in our minds.
There are new children growing on campus, there are new professors and new personnel that have seen the transition of the UP Diliman Campus into an oasis amidst the commercial buildings that have sprouted along Katipunan Road and Commonwealth Avenue. Our stories here are when things were simple, carefree and delightful, we wish the new generation to have the same kind of thoughts when they think of their UP Campus.
