Mga Laro ng mga Batang UP Campus 60-70-80's
These are the collection of games that the kids growing up on campus played. Adele Linsangan started the thread and it grew to be the trigger for playing all over again! (photo on the left is courtesy of Bong Yogore, 1960)
Yogore sisters climbing aratiles after school
- Adele Sesbreño Linsangan Tanching, thanks Lito Dayrit. That i remember well. Hahahaha! He he he.
- Adele Sesbreño Linsangan Mary Ellen Yogore Kimmeth, i don't think I'm familiar with bulong pari or nakalimutan ko na.
- Candy Bandong Sipa (with washer and papel de Japon) may girl's version where ankle goes outward, boy's version, the leg goes toward the groin.
- Candy Bandong We had a blackboard in our house. We player teacher-teacheran and libra-librarian.
What about bahay-bahayan?
- Nina Beza Demonteverde Ayan Candy, dami na tayong material on this topic.
- Candy Bandong Nina: this sounds morbid, but we played patay-patayan. Yung mga bed sheets gagawing by putting it over a small table. Tapos nasa loob nicho pretending to be dead. The rest will be crying outside. Lol
- Candy Bandong Walang computer games sigh.
- Wellie Baldoria Candy: Sama natin sa Takutan sa Diliman. Maybe at one time when you were playing patay- patayan there was someone or something with the player playing dead .... without knowing it ...Ooooooo!!
- Wellie Baldoria Nina: Si Lester magaling sa Holen he can hit an opponents marble 6 feet away. Ayaw nga namin isali noon kasi siya lagi nananalo. inuuwi niya lahat ng holen namin..
- Mary Ellen Yogore Kimmeth Maybe I do not have the right name for my jolen (holen) game. you dig 3 wholes, about two to three feet in between and a line at the beginning. The goal is to get it in the last hole without your opponent knocking you out, If they knock you out, you start at the beginning again.
- Mary Ellen Yogore Kimmeth holes not wholes.
- Nina Beza Demonteverde Wel: kaya nun pa lang na-practice na ang thumb ni Big sa pag-asintado sa holen, that's why he did well as a guitarist when he grew up. Say mo? Candy Bandong - first time I heard of the patay-patayan. Was this your invention?
- Wellie Baldoria Another version of holen is putting an agreed number of marbles in a circle (1.5ft in diameter) then 6 ft. away from the circle the players would throw their marble(pato) at a scratched line on the ground to determine the 1st, 2nd player and so on. From that line the players would throw their pato near the circle of marbles and whoever hits the most marbles out of the circle wins and gets to keep the marble taken out of the circle.
- Wellie Baldoria He he, ayaw mo talaga tantanan si Big ah. Sige, let's make him our project, kahit isa isang daliri lang ang gamitin niya.
- Wellie Baldoria Another childhood game "Habulan Statue".
- Wellie Baldoria Sonny . . . Holen in addition to "puwera kiling"," bawal kadyut!"April 2 at 3:44pm · Like
I use to hear that but never knew what it meant.
- Adele Sesbreño Linsangan Marianne Dayrit Sison, ito yung thread ng games we played. Kumusta ka?
- Candy Bandong May naglaro ba ng panaan? As in making your own bow and arrow tapos instead of baril barilan, panaan? Si Tito OD Corpuz ay archery enthusiast and sportsman, kapit bahay namin sila at may target practice kaming pinapana.
- Sonny Damasco Wellie Baldoria : sa trumpo: "batbatan", sa holen: "palagay"
- Geline Avenir Merkel I watched my brods play Tex, and baril barilan with pellets. Di ba pulvura ang mga iyon, toxic and dangerous. Then, one time I opened several perminantes and got the barena and hit it, it blasted my eardums, I could not hear for a week!
- Adele Sesbreño Linsangan another word from the past, perminante. Thanks Geline Avenir Merkel.
- Geline Avenir Merkel Then, next time naman. We discovered mercury in a bottle, and kept rubbing that thing onto a coin till it was plated. Alas, it was so slippery. And mercury is so toxic...think my brain got fried that day on.April 3 at 7:11pm · Like

- Geline Avenir Merkel The Mateo girls, me and my late sister Baby, would subkit the fire flowers by the tree of Coop. And we take apart the flowers and holding the filaments, we'd carefully try to kawit the opponents anthers till it falls off. Sounds silly but was so hard.April 3 at 7:21pm · Like
- Geline Avenir Merkel And the Mateo's had a beautiful garden and a violeta in front. I would sit to closely watch the catterpillars, then try to catch it with a stick..yikes! I was fascinated and try to catch a dragonfly. I learned discipline and patience.April 3 at 7:25pm · Like

- Vg Avenir Did anyone play with plastic straws? Kasi I was fond of getting plastic straws around the Coop, then kung mag burn ng leaves sa garden namin, I would enjoy putting one end of the straw in the flame and watch the plastic drip with fire as it melted. But soon I learned my lesson. The molten plastic reached my fingers, aray!!! My 3 fingers were charred!!!April 4 at 9:31am · Like
- Vg Avenir Right now the only memory I had was the regular bruises on my knees because of my falls from our running. Kahit masakit ang sugat, you tried your best to walk upright and without a limp. - Joan Cuyugan Bohlmann the younger kids (bopit and leloy) would shake the mango trees and collect the salagubangs that fell (like fruit), tie thread around their torsos like leashes and would let them fly in circles. they would also hold one in the palm of their hand and make like they were clapping? I don't know what this was supposed to do to them. sometimes I would give the old tree a good shake just for the heck of it.April 5 at 10:31am via mobile · Like · 2

Hard to pull back as a kid but the velosity of the marble can bring down a clump of green mangoes, no problemo.April 6 at 1:31am · Like
- Candy Bandong Hindi ito game but I remember vandalizing banana trees by removing the soft part of the trunk that can easily come off and use the very tender edges as a harmonica. Strip the almost translucent fiber and put it between your lips and make musical sounds!
- Jojo Fernandez Jolens at tex. Tumbang preso, bahaybahayan,
- Sonny Damasco Saranggola -- the big kites were called "gurion".
- Candy Bandong Sonny, we made our own kites with newspaper, Tingting and my mother's sewing thread.
- Lambert Gutierrez "Dogfight" yata iyon. Usually the big kites (gurion) were used for this.
- Nina Beza Demonteverde "Tulog ng tanghali" bago maglaro - the obligatory if not customary after lunch siesta. Merienda pagka-gising. By 3:30 to 4 PM, labasan na mga bata, until sundown. By 6 PM, dapat naka-garahe na sa bahay, in time for the Angelus ("Orasyon na naman, panahon na ng ating pagmumuni-muni" was announced on radio every night at 6 PM without fail. - Vg Avenir Sa station ni Johhny de Leon! Yun Agelus na yun meron daw deck of cards.
- Nina Beza Demonteverde That's the one Vg Avenir ! Exactly. Then Tia Dely pag 3 PM. Then sa gabi yung mga romansang drama, pag Fri yung Gabi ng Lagim, if not " Katotohanan o Guni-guni" .
- Vg Avenir My father always had a small radio on during scheds of Johhny. It's the news and commentary source then. Eh do you remember Damian Sotto? Naku bombastic talaga ang pagmumura nya.
- Vg Avenir There were "live" radio shows during weekends. Meron si Johhny de Leon and si Rafael Yabut. I think this started during the war years and umabot pa sa early 60s. Purong song numbers in between comedy skits.
- Nina Beza Demonteverde Damian Sotto was the fave of my Lolo, and Mr Galan's too (accdg to Corinth De Leon, kasi kapit-bahay nila sa UPV).
- Mary Ellen Yogore Kimmeth @nina...Omg, gabi nang lagim, and Valentina, baaing ahas, so scary and fun.
- Mary Ellen Yogore Kimmeth Babaeng ahas
- Alberto Cayabyab I was just reminiscing, at 10pm when DZUP signed off, they had a signiture tune. Anyone remember the musical piece?
- Nina Beza Demonteverde Bert (or is it Bubut?) - ask Cip.
- Alberto Cayabyab Why of course, Cip. 3 musical pieces come to mind. I don't remember the sequence but it keeps on humming in my head. I will have to wait, Cip and family are on R & R in Sydney. Bubut when I was little, but hindi na nahinog, so bubut pa rin.
- Nina Beza Demonteverde I met up with Cip here in SYD last wk, Wed. They are back in MNL by now - since yestday Sat. But yeh, let him rest muna; masyadong nag-enjoy daw ang family nya sa SYD. Email and egrps - yan, maasahan sya sa ganyan; masipag, maagap. But Fbk? No way!

- Lanelle Abueva Fernando tadpoles and guppies.
- Nina Beza Demonteverde Yes, those tadpoles, and the paper boats. My yaya always told me never to touch frogs kasi magkaka-kulugo daw. But tadpoles OK lang - those wiggly creatures at the canals. Mga batang kalye at canal pala tayo ano?

- Nina Beza Demonteverde Yes Bu, kangkong thrived freely in the canals. I loved picking kangkong tops, then boiled them to make ensalada. They were meant to be stormwater drains, or drains for leaking NWSA pipes (like the one we had at the backyard of #52, that's why we were able to grow vegies too; free irrigation). Hardly any pollution that time.
- Vg Avenir There was a canal at the back of the cottage in Area 3. Water was coming from the Coop and the cottages on the right side of Area 3. We had gabi in abundance along the stream. All neighbors asked for the leaves to cook laing. Then our huge avocado tree along the stream too. During harvest all neighbors got from us a large box of fruits.
Vg Avenir - yes, pati gabi pala grew in the canals. Adele Sesbreño Linsangan - kasi the kangkong then was DDT-flavoured ... lol.
- Vg Avenir It reached a point, when the avocado tree had so much fruits, and we have given everyone a milk box of the harvest, pati kubrador ng jueteng and magbobote nabibigyan na ng avocado, hahaha10
- Adele Sesbreño Linsangan Totoo lahat yan Vg and Nina.
